Palampur enjoys a very tourist friendly climate throughout the year. The summers are mild with occasional showers unlike the hot summers in the plains.
 
This program gives you an opportunity to volunteer in Palampur as well as take part in exciting weekend trips to Dharamsala, Manali and a trekking trip on the Himalayan Mountain Range.

Program Details 

Volunteers in the Summer Program work in Childcare Project or Teaching Project placements in Palampur. Volunteers work for 5 days in a week in the project placements and take part in weekend tour activities on the weekends. 
 
In the Childcare placement, volunteers work in day care centers in the areas surrounding Palampur town. Volunteers also have the option of working in a school depending on the availability and the school calendar. As a volunteer you can carry out different activities at the project and can also do developmental activities with the assistance of other volunteers. The local Volunteering India staff would be more than happy to provide you with any assistance. Volunteers can decorate and paint the childcare centers and also can make improvements in schools.

Weekend Excursions (Included in Program Cost)

Trip to Manali 
The beautiful hill station of Manali lies in the Beas river valley and is one of the most popular tourist locations  in north India. Manali is located at a height of 6398ft and offers some spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain range. Volunteers will go on this trip on the first weekend of the program  A two day trip to Manali will be included in this package.
 
Details of this trip are as given below  :-
 
Duration - 2days / 1 night
Starting date - Saturday morning
Distance - Palampur to Manali (204 km)
 
Day 1 - Palampur to Manali (night stay)
Leave Palampur early in the morning and have breakfast on the way. After reaching Manali,check in the hotel and have lunch. After lunch, visit to Solang Valley - Winter Sport Location and Vashisht Temple ( Well known for Hot Springs). In the evening, volunteers take a tour of Old Manali and have dinner on their own.

Trekking Trip in Himalayas
Volunteers do a weekend trekking trip to Triund on the second weekend of the program. The trip starts from McLeodganj which is a 40 minute drive from Palampur. The 10km trek from Mcleodganj is one of the shortest and the most popular trekking trails in the state of Himachal Pradesh. 
 
Triund provides a panoramic view of Kangra valley and the plains of Punjab. The magnificent Dhauladhar stands on one side, while the wide valley expanse is on the southern side.

Leave from Palampur to McLeodganj (By Car)
Mcleodganj to Triund (2900metres) - 10 km trek
Night stay at Triund

Sunday - 
Travel from Triund to Laka Got (3250 mtrs) to watch the magnificent snowline.
Return to Mcleodganj and then travel to Palampur by car. 
 
Sightseeing Trip - in and around Palampur 
This trip is mostly done on a weekdays when volunteers complete their placement work. Volunteers on this trip take a tour of Tea gardens and Tea Factory and also visit famous attractions in and around Palampur such as Baijnath Temple (1000 year old temple) and Neugal River.

What does your Program Fee Cover ?

Pre Departure information - A comprehensive booklet to prepare you for your trip before you come. You will get this booklet as soon as you pay your registration fee after completing your application form online. The booklet provides information regarding the country , projects , coordinators , Things to pack , Visas and Emergency Contact Information.
 
Pickup and Drop - Interns joining the programs in Palampur can choose to arrive at Dharamsala Airport by taking a connecting flight from Delhi. You can also arrive in Palampur directly by bus from Delhi. All volunteers would be provided pickup and drop back to the airport/ bus station.
 
Volunteers also have a choice to arrive by train from Delhi. Volunteers choosing to arrive by train need to arrive at Pathankot or Una railway station from where they will be driven to Palampur. Volunteers need to incur extra charges for pickup and drop to train station.
 
Orientation - A half day orientation will be provided by the local coordinators in Palampur. Topics relevant to the project, safety guidelines, customs, local transportation, weekend activities are covered in the orientation.
 
You are encouraged to join the Orientation Week - Learn Language, History, Culture & Discover India! in Delhi which gives them an opportunity to explore different sights in Delhi and also learn some basic Hindi.
 
Welcome Dinner - Dinner out with local staff and other volunteers and interns to welcome you in the program.
 
Accommodation - Volunteer accommodations are provided in the volunteer homebase. The accommodations are well furnished with bed and bedding provided. Rooms are shared with other volunteers. During the weekend tour to Manali, accommodation would be provided in 3 star hotel accommodation.
 
Food - Volunteers and Interns are served with three meals a day in this project - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Typical vegetarian Indian meals may include Dal (Lentils), Curry, Rice, Vegetables, Salad, Yoghurt, Roti (Indian Bread). We can accommodate any special dietary requirements for the volunteers and interns.
 
Weekend Trips - Volunteers go on a trip to Manali and also trekking trip in the Himalayas. Palampur Sightseeing tour is also included.
 
Yoga Class - Once a Week - by a trained Yoga instructor
 
Visit to Tea Garden and Tea Factory - Volunteers and Interns are taken on a tour of a tea garden and tea factory to see how the famous Kangra Green Tea is manufactured.
 
In-country support - You will  have the support and assistance of the local coordinators and staff in case of any Emergency. All our staff and coordinators are available for any help which is required by the interns.
