There are about 100
million street children in India who do not
attend any school and spend most of their time
on the streets. In Delhi, the capital city, it
is estimated that there are close to 1, 75,000
street children of which 7-10 % are runaways. In
fact there are more than 2500 children who live
in and around New Delhi Railway Station. They
can be seen scavenging the rubbish heap for a
meal , sleeping between the tracks , often
beaten and sexually abused , falling prey to
drug peddlers , pimps and child traffickers .
There is so much missing from their lives –
food, security, health, love & education and a
place to play sleep and dream.
Volunteers can bring smile on the faces of these
disadvantaged street children by helping to
create an environment conducive for their
holistic development in order to enable them
become a part of mainstream society . Volunteers
can work at the contact points, being run by
various organizations, which serve as day care
centers for these street children in India. They
can assist in providing love, care, basic
literacy, recreation and most importantly spend
time and shower affection on them. It can make a
world of difference to their lives. We work with
local organizations who have earned national
acclaim in doing work towards helping the street
children in India. |
