Summer volunteering in India
How to volunteer in India in June, July or August: the weather, the start dates, and the programs that suit a summer break.
Summer is when many students and teachers are free, and all our programs in Delhi and Jaipur keep running through June, July and August. Here is what to expect and how to plan.
Summer start dates
These are the Sundays you can start in June, July and August. Delhi programs start twice a month and Jaipur programs every week.
| Month | New Delhi | Jaipur |
|---|---|---|
| June 2027 | Sun 6, Sun 20 | Sun 6, Sun 13, Sun 20, Sun 27 |
| July 2027 | Sun 4, Sun 18 | Sun 4, Sun 11, Sun 18, Sun 25 |
| August 2027 | Sun 1, Sun 15 | Sun 1, Sun 8, Sun 15, Sun 22, Sun 29 |
What the weather is like
North India is hot in summer. From April to June, temperatures in Delhi and Jaipur often pass 40°C. The monsoon usually arrives in July and lasts into September, bringing heavy showers, humidity and slightly cooler days. Projects carry on through both, and some adjust their hours: the slum schools in Jaipur, for example, teach from 9am to noon in the hottest months.
Programs that suit a summer break
- Short on time? The 2-week mini break and Childcare & elephants pack volunteering and sightseeing into two planned weeks.
- Want shorter project days? The Jaipur programs run three to five hours a day, so you can rest through the afternoon heat or explore early.
- New to India? Start with the Hindi & culture week, then go on to a Delhi placement.
- Studying medicine or nursing? The medical internship works well as a summer elective.
Tips for the heat and the rain
- Light, loose cotton clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Indian cotton kurtas are cheap and cool.
- A refillable bottle. Drink filtered or bottled water only, and plenty of it.
- Sunscreen, a hat, and mosquito repellent, especially in the monsoon.
- A light rain jacket or umbrella from July.
- Plan sightseeing for early morning or evening, and save museums and malls for the afternoons.
Booking a summer place
If your dates are fixed by a university or school calendar, apply early so you can book flights with confidence. You can hold your place with the booking deposit and pay the rest 45 days before you start.
