People volunteer in India at every stage of life: between school and university, in a summer break, during a career break or after retiring. Most of them have wanted to see India for years. Volunteering gives them a reason to go, a useful way to spend their days and a ready-made community from the moment they land.
If you are still deciding, here are seven reasons to make the trip, and to make it with a team that lives here.
1. You join projects that local people run

The projects you can join are run by local people: shelter homes and education centers for children, community centers where women learn English and trades, special education centers, schools and a private hospital. The staff know their communities and stay in charge. You bring time, energy and an extra pair of hands, for work they have asked for help with.
That matters, because the most useful volunteering slots into something that carries on long after you fly home. Our page on why you pay to volunteer explains how part of your program price supports the projects.
2. A local team has welcomed volunteers since 2004

Volunteering India is based in New Delhi, and since 2004 we have hosted volunteers from more than 30 countries. Our coordinators live locally. They meet you at the airport, run your orientation, travel with you to your project the first time and keep in touch throughout your stay, and someone on our team can be reached at any hour. We set out what that looks like in 10 reasons to join Volunteering India.
3. You can choose Delhi or Jaipur

Delhi is the big, busy capital: Mughal tombs, Old Delhi’s bazaars, a Metro that reaches almost everywhere and the projects where we have worked longest. Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is smaller and easier to get to know, with forts and palaces all around; we started placing volunteers there in 2026, and you can live at our volunteer house or with a host family. You can also combine the two cities: tell us your plan when you apply and we will line up the dates.
4. You don’t need months to spare
Programs start from one week. Delhi placements run for up to 18 weeks and begin on two Sundays a month; Jaipur placements run for up to 12 weeks and begin every Sunday. If you only have two weeks, the mini break pairs eight days with children in Delhi with a guided city tour and a day at the Taj Mahal, all arranged for you. Prices start from $495 for one week.
5. Your weekends are free to explore

Project days run Monday to Friday, so evenings and weekends are yours. From Delhi you can see the Taj Mahal in a day, spend a weekend in Jaipur, or take the train to Amritsar and watch the Golden Temple light up after dark. Our weekend trips take care of transport, hotels and guides. You can also travel independently, to Rishikesh in the Himalayan foothills, for example, or to the lake town of Pushkar near Jaipur, and your coordinator will help you plan the route.
6. The food and everyday culture

Meals are home-style and vegetarian: dal, seasonal vegetables, rice and fresh roti, eaten with the other volunteers. Delhi includes breakfast and dinner from Monday to Saturday, and Jaipur three meals a day. Lunch near your Delhi project is a chance to try a thali at a local dhaba, and Sundays are made for parathas and street snacks in Old Delhi.
You learn some Hindi at orientation, ride the Metro or an auto-rickshaw to work and, if your dates line up, join in festivals such as Holi in spring or Diwali in October or November. After a few weeks of this, India stops being a backdrop and starts to feel familiar.
7. Experience that counts at home

A few weeks on a project gives you more to talk about in an interview than most summer jobs. You learn to plan an activity for a mixed-ability group, explain things without a shared language, adapt when plans change and work within someone else’s system. Health students can see a busy hospital at work on our medical internship, future teachers can assist in classrooms on our teaching program in Jaipur, and anyone can ask for a certificate of participation at the end.
